Hotel Taragarh -
Formerly known as Alhilal (land of the
crescent moon),the palace, was built in the early 1930s as a
summer resorts. It was bought by the royal family of Jammu &
Kashmir in 1951 for the dowager Maharani who lived there for
several years. It is now run as a hotel by the present royal
family.
In 1931, the 27 year old Nawab of Bahawalpur built large
European-style summer residence for himself up in the cool
Himalayan jungle of Kangra district . He laid out lush
gardens, built a glass pleasure pavilion and a mosque and
christened his country palace Al Hilal ( The Crescent Moon
).
The ravishingly beautiful land of Kashmir saw many a golden
age- of Ashoka, of Zain Al Abidin, of Mughal emperors Akbar,
Jehangir and Shah Jahan. After the decline of Mughal
authority in the 18th century, Kashmir passed into the hands
of Afghan kings. In 1819, the city of Srinagar and parts of
Kashmir were conquered by the Sikh armies of Maharaja Ranjit
Singh. The successful military expedition was led by his
Dogra general, Raja Gulab Singh of Jammu and went on to
create the state of Jammu and Kashmir
Sightseeing : DHARAMSHALA
(60 kms.), is the principal town ship of the region and
is magnificently set to the back ground of the Dhauladhar

streams cut a path thorough them allowing for exciting

TASHIJONG MONASTERY
This monastery is one of the several built after the Dalai
Lama settled here. Tashijong also promotes arts like carpet
weaving, tankha painting and block printing and runs a
school for young Tibetan children. more info
TEA GARDENS: For the nature lovers there are
interesting walks through the tea gardens on the slopes of
the surrounding hills where one can see the cheerful hill
people at work.
SOBHA SINGH ART GALLERY : Sobha Singh, a Sikh artist
lived here in the 1950s and 60s and later became known for
his paintings of the romantic legends of Sohni Mahiwal and
Hir Ranja and other religious paintings. Most of his
original work is still displayed here
MCLEODGUNJ : Often called little Lhasa,at 1,770m this
is a residence of Dalai Lama and the is a settelement of
Tibetian Buddhist who sought refuge here in the year 1960
following their exile from Tibet. Just a kilometer's walk
further is a tibetain institute of performing arts which
organizes a ten day folk poera in dharamshalla commencing
on
the second Saturday of april. Mcleodgunj has Tibetan
handicrafts center. Several antique and curio shops and on
Sunday a flea market. This place is 10 Kms by road 3 Kms on
foot.
ST.JOHN' CHURCH
One elegant Church is of St.John's Church in wilderness
containing some priceless stained glass windows. One panel
potrays Christ and the other St.Paul's the Baptist.

LOCATION : Taragarh is 530 KM for New Delhi on NH-20, You Should Drive via
Chandigarh-Ropar-Kiratpur Saheb-Nangal-UnaKangra-Palampur- Taragarh.
It is a 10 hr Journey and we suggest an overnight half at Fort
Nalagarh/chandigarh.
Fly From New Delhi to kangra Airport by Indian Airlines (18
seater) thrice a week. Taragarh is 55kms from the airport(1.15
hours drive)
You could leave by Amritsar Swarn Shatabdi which leaves for
Jullunder at around 7:20am from New Delhi Rly Stn and reaches
jullunder at 12 noon,Taragarh is approx,195km 4.30 hrs drive to
taragarh.There are 2 to 3 overnight trains to pathankot, from
where it is a 3 hour scenic drive
